Report #19
1.21.2001 - MAJ Astarosta

Kappa Squadron Report - January 21th, 2001 - MAJ Astarosta
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gentlemen, be ready, as we'll soon test the new capacities of our new almost-full squadron. (Dum-dum-dum, dum-de-dum, dum-de-dum...and the Imperial march goes on...)

Squadron News
-----------------------

-As the intro speaks, I'm on the lookout for a suitable rival in a flying comp, I have a few in mind, if you got suggestions they're welcome.

-LT Hawk Hunter, currently at Kappa 1-2, will be taking a leave to the Reserves, as he sorts out some RL issues. Good luck my friend, I'll try to save your spot! ;) May the Keg be with you!

-But no sad faces, no worries, cause life is good!! Former Kappan CM Ninja is transfering back!! An amazing pilot and great friend is returning, someone who never lost the Kappa Spirit!! And someone who could drown a CMDR with BSFs easily!! :p Expect him to be around as his CMDR approves his transfer.

-The Kappa Holiday Comp has ended, and the winner is CM Algaron!! yaaay!! details on scores and participations on Misc section.

-LCM Tim has made a proposal to me about an intra squad mission designing competition. If you don't oppose, we'll could soon organize one! Thoughts?

-Expect an uniform update soon.

-LT Max Danzig hasn't answered any mails so far. Are you there? Join the fun!

-Another edition of the Kappa Meeting on IRC has successfully been made!! Cheers once again go to LT Razor, who with his macho Jedi ranting scared the heck out of everyone and got them to attend. Let's see if on the next one the new fellas attend! ;) Check out the attached log to see what you missed or to be ashamed of the nonsense you've spoken :p

-And to carry the party straight to the infinite, this was a promotion and award week!! Congrats to LT Reb Crush, who got a CoB, LT Razor on his first medal, also a CoB and CM Algaron on the ISM he got for winning the Holiday comp. And yes, also me for being promoted to MAJ ;p
As I said somewhere, the only way that it stops sounding awkward is changing my nickname. I'll be soon known as Major "Pain in the Arse" Astarosta...wait, you say they already call me like that? :p

-This week's Ol' Roasty's words o' advice: "Never play Diablo for more than two hours straight...you might end with your mouse-holding hand moving by it's own...FOREVER. Heh, that sounded dramatic :p"

Squadron Orders
-------------------------

-Again, I remind you to submit your inputs for the Encyclopaedia and the Cadet Guide to CM Algaron. The Encyclopaedia is taking shape thanks to Reb Crush's contribution, so follow his example and submit!

-The Squeaker Hunt comp is on till the end of this month! Help Akela and Melvin find Private Squeaker, so our WC's torturing and special-ops elite cute-animal squadron is complete again! The divisions are in detail:

1. Flying division 1: fly TC-TIE Battle #107, Farewell to Old Friend, laserless (attached)

2. Flying division II: fly an assigned TIE-FREE Mission within the 24 hours
since its announcement.

3. MB Tracking division: seek through the EH-related message boards and see if you can find the post. Reply if you do within the 24 hours of the post.

4. Graphic division: submit a sattellite photo of Squeaker's current location (of course you have to make a graphic, unless you own a personal geostationary satellite :p)
5. Fiction division: write a story about Squeaker's 'odd'isey and his return.

Hurry up and submit!!

A Question of Faith

There's a new Fan Film out which was previewed last year in a one-minute long trailer. "A Question of Faith" starring Jason Alexander (no, not that bald guy from Seinfeld) has some hammy acting (blame it on the Force), but they make up for it with spectacular lightsaber duels!

You can download the movie here: http://www.theforce.net/theater/shortfilms/faith/index.shtml

Battlegroup Report Virus

This weeks' Battlegroups Weekly Report was an HTML email which unfortunately contained the WScript.KakWorm virus. This virus will automatically infect your system by exploiting a security loophole in Outlook Express if you so much as LOOK at the email it arrives in. The virus contains a payload which will cause random shutdowns of your system at certain trigger dates. Microsoft are aware of this problem and have released a patch for Outlook Express which removes the security loophole which allows the virus to function. Details of the patch can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS99-032.asp If you already have this patch installed, then you have nothing further to worry about, your system is safe. If you do NOT have this patch installed, read on...

If you received this weeks' Weekly Battlegroup Report in HTML format and did NOT get a virus warning from your email scanner (or if you don't have one installed) then you HAVE BEEN INFECTED by the virus and must take the following steps to remove it:

Visit this website: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000020318071406 ...and read the instructions contained therein. The most simple and effective way to neutralise the virus is to download and run the fix tool located at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.fix.html This programme will repair all damage caused by the variant of the virus distributed in this weeks' Battlegroups Report. In the unlikely event that it doesn't work on your system, there are also comprehensive details on the same webpage for removing the virus manually.

To conclude, I'd reccommend that anyone who doesn't already own an AntiVirus programme that includes an email scanner gets one NOW. Thanks for your attention.

IWATS Core passes 2000

The IWATS Core course just passed two thousand graduates (2,000), making it still the most successful IWATS course ever. The next closest course in terms of graduates is mIRC/1 with nearl 900. The IWATS Core graduates form roughly 32% of the overall IWATS graduates.
