(COL|Laan) How did you get involved in
the EH? How did you first hear about it?
(`sTOart)
Actually, my friend brought me into the TC.
I'm not sure where he found it, but it was back in junior high. We used
to sit in the tech lab at our school that our CTS teacher was kind enough to basically
designate to us for morning and lunch hours (and any classes, including math
that we had with him) and code MUDs, play JK and SC, make web pages, and
whatever other little projects we felt like.
He was removed from the club (although his profile is still out there)
but made a reappearance

This was after a long stint where I made it to VA in a club called the 5th
fleet (http://www.newrepublic.de)

I was only 12 at the time I believe. ). )
(COL|Laan) Impressive achievement, which leads onto my next
question :)
(COL|Laan)
You’ve been in the EH for several years, and served on the Challenge for most
of that. What positions have you held?
(`sTOart) hmm, well, I was a cadet for
quite some time and then was declared inactive. So after I had my flight
requirements I got promoted to FM/SL and started my long term in Thunder. Albeit, after being promoted to FM/LT and
then FL/LT I kind of dropped off the face of the planet and was AWOL. When I came back was when I really started my
climb, FM/LT - FL/LT,LCM,CM,CPT and when I finally got the chance (I never
applied anywhere else because I
(`sTOart) loved my squadron so much) CMDR
of Thunder squadron!
(`sTOart) I held CMDR for the second
longest term (second only to the Legendary COL Beef), where I climbed up the
ranks until finally a position as a flag on my beloved Challenge opened up.

(`sTOart) Not so much, it wasn't my first
application... but I think my passion towards the Challenge and it's growth
(and having gotten Thunder to 12 members during my tenure) helped my app ;)

that I even applied for TO... Ender and Sarin basically PUSHED me for months to
apply

You are currently the Training Officer. What does the job essentially involve
doing? Is this challenging for you?
(`sTOart) LOL, wow, the problem with the
position of TO is it tends to be the most open description out there
(COL|Laan)
That’s why I asked the question :)
(`sTOart) Yes, I deal with cadet training,
approving and running/making comps of all levels, but on top of that it's
everything IWATS... course maintenance (make/remove/update), kicking my PROFs
in the bum, awarding PROFs.
(`sTOart) One of the most important things
I'm doing right now is focusing on how to get more cadets through training

The mentorship program i assume?
(`sTOart) Yes, along with one of my TOAs,
COL George, we're preparing a mentorship program.

Excuse the pun, but is the job a challenge?
(`sTOart) lol
(`STOart) Always, because I'm always having
to use whatever creativity I can muster up or leech from others ;)
(`sTOart) I don't have it as easy as OPS (a
position I’ve desired for years ... as a medal whore... ).)) which is mostly
just approve/disapprove
(`sTOart) now, I'm not saying he's got it
really easy... just different, I guess.
(`sTOart) It's like the difference between
English and math.

How big an influence do you think your position has on the fleet?
(COL|Laan)
Answered in part already I know
(`sTOart) Well, when it comes to training,
huge, otherwise, what is the type of activity that keeps people going?
Competitions, in that regard, it has a large impact.
(`sTOart) IWATS is important, but it's more
of a side enrichment than anything else (COL|Laan) Right

The information you’re seeking on previous fleet comps suggests something big
in the works. Got any clues on what we
can eventually expect?
(`sTOart) Well, two major things. 1) a new SSL.
I'm *NOT* on the SOV (as my MB location states) so I want to change the
name... it's also being reworked for equality in membership numbers, activity,
and cross-platform

That sounds interesting
(`sTOart) 2) A large fleet wide competition
which will focus mostly on the training aspect, including mission creation,
fiction (be it your experience fictional or otherwise through your first few
months/years), flying, gfx, etc... and maybe even a little tribute to my
longest standing Cadet, Galaxina (who I'm sure sticks around just cause I'm so
cool ;) )

You’ve been in the EH for over 5 years now. What has made you stay as a member
for this long? What is it about the EH that has kept your interest?
(`sTOart) Simply, it was the people. It was a cultish following (just ask Alexi
and others in Thunder) under our Beefy CMDR, COL
Beef. When you make friends here,
they're the reason you stay. That is the
main purpose of the mentorship program in development.

I understand, same thing in most squadrons i think
(`sTOart) At least in the good ones,
there's something that ties everyone together.

You’ve seen a lot of different and talented officers in your time I
assume. What qualities do you think
stand out, and are there any officers you can point to as role models for other
pilots?
(`sTOart) Well, in an infrequent case you
have officers such as my other TOA, Brukhar, who is constantly doing anything
and everything for everyone. I greatly
admire his motivation and enthusiasm, which in adequate doses, are probably the
most important qualities to have to suceed in this club, and life.

I've seen this trait come out especially are COL Beef, MAJ Alexi Stukov, COL
Coranel Both, COL George, MAJ Fritz Von Stukart, GN Nightmare, and of course
FRODO! Now, there's plenty more, but I

(`sTOart) I personally take great pride in
having brought Thunder to 12 members in my tenure and CMDR. As a TO, if it gets off the ground well, the
mentorship program. And, for some reason
everyone associates carrots, spam and squirrels with me. ^_^

How useful do you think the IWATS system is? Does simply taking every test make
for a good pilot do you think?
(COL|Laan)
Or is it lacking in any area?
(`sTOart) It's lacking in plenty of
areas... some courses aren't very clear, some need some drastic updating, some
questions aren't very clear. That's why
were'e always renovating. For the most
part IWATS is both for fun, and for reference... I know lots of people in this
club that have gone to IWATS courses as reference when taking a course in
HTML/PHP/CSS/etc ^_^

Mores specifically, do you agree with those who inist that the CORE test needs
to be changed? That the training requirments themselves must be adjusted?

Considering the main game platforms are bordering on ancient :P
(`sTOart) Yes, CORE does need to be updated
and has suffered some significant updates as of late, including an entire
section on cheating (for my TACcy)... It's on my todo list
