Krath Debate Question - KP Jeremy Leto Cleon Alexander Demerzel

Does the past dictate how the future will be played out or will the actions of the current membership make a difference? In essence, if we do not change something within in the DB are we doomed to make the same mistakes?

Cause and effect. Action and reaction. Herein lies the principle of casualty that past actions will have effects on future events, which is the most basic assumption of the question before us. Yet destiny only determines what will occur and not the how wide-ranging the effect of the action would be. Consequently, I personally do believe that actions in the present will make a difference even if it only is damage control. History will repeat itself so long as we do not learn from our mistakes, but even then that does not necessarily equate to the DB being doomed if we do not rectify those mistakes, for as mentioned, how effective the damage control measures are does make or break an organisation. Using damage control measures however, must by no means be the only way the DB operates, for the very purpose of preventative measures should be to help limit the negative impact of supposed solutions that are newly implemented. The DB itself will not be doomed unless every single member condemns it to be so, and no matter how many door that may be closed to us, new opportunities will arise. All we have to do is seize the day, which in the ancient Latin tongue is Carpe Diem.

The current system that allows for smooth operation within the DB does have its origins in the past, yet they were not set in stone and have been evolving ever since. While I might not have been around during the time where the House, Clan and Order systems were being implemented, the history of Clan Tarentum has recorded such and I fully am aware of the progressive transformation of the DB then. The Order-Clan-House system has profoundly affected the structure of the DB by means of how competitions are carried out for without it vendettas would be almost meaningless, how a member rises up through the positions for without it there would not be such a thing as Clan or House Summits, and how politicking may occur for without the system there would not be any. Still when one looks at the system that the DB possess, how effective the system really is, is determined by the activity levels generated as well as how involved the members really are. This indeed is a very clear illustration that the actions of the current membership will make a difference, for we determine how active this Subgroup really is and that matters far more than our most glorious history. In the entire scheme of events, a glorious history’s sole purpose is to be a rallying cry, beyond that current reciprocal action does have to follow for it to be effective.

Yet one key feature of the Dark Brotherhood does have to be changed and that is the current inflexibility of the Order-Clan-House-Battleteam model, for given varying membership and activity levels such is not always suited for every single Order, Clan, House or Battleteam. For example, when the entire membership or 80-90% of a House’s membership make up the membership of the Battleteam, the Battleteam is really redundant, and until the membership expands for there to be competing Battleteams within a House, the Battleteam team layer should be suspended and the focus switched to intra-House and inter-House competitions. By the same coin, given limited membership the DB cannot have too many Clans and some may need to have its membership suspended. This has already been done, but it does have to be coupled by efforts to get those who are now without a Clan to become a member of those that still are open. Yes, Clan loyalty may need to be played down for such to occur but ultimately we are all members of the DB, and it will be a completely different experience being in a different Clan, given the limited autonomy that the Clans have in making themselves unique as well as the different styles of leadership.

The issue of websites and databases, would also need to be a very major issue that must be looked at, for given the recent advances in scripting and database languages, they have almost become indispensable due to the convinience they bring. The ease at which news posts and reports can be added to main sites within the DB and even the EH as a whole is a mainstay that once removed due to database errors or other unforeseen circumstances, plunges the administration into disarray. Such has already been seen very recently with the most recent split where the renegades took the entire database and site with them leaving us to start from scratch, and causing much confusion in the interim period while a new database was being re-worked. The same mistake will be repeated if we continue to rely too heavily on databases, no matter how convenient it may be to use them for databases can fail and history has shown us that they do, and no matter how ‘infrequent’ it may seem to occur, when it does occur the effect of such is extremely broad and can incapacitate the DB for a time. This is what spells doom for the DB, and unless we have a dedicated team of database coders always at hand, we will run into difficulties. Even then only preventitive measures are being taking and not solutions.

Politicking is the lifeblood of any organisation, and without it, the organisation is essentially dead. No matter what we do such will always remain, though it is absolutely valid to desire that such be limited so that powerful cliques are not formed for the sole purpose of seeking the destruction of each other for they essentially harm the DB itself.

Thank you for your kind attention.
