Budget LucasArts Games
PC

Review by: Werdna Elbee

Lucasarts have just announce that they are going to re-release a batch of old games at low prices, and in them cool DVD boxes. We'll be having a look at each game that has just been re-released in Britain, but I should warn you that in America you can also get SWE1:The Phantom Menace and SWE1: Racer for on budget too. I'll just tell you now that both are mediocre and not worth $15 each...but if you see them in sale for $10 dollars or less you should give them a go.

X-Wing Collector's Series - Contains X-Wing and TIE Fighter, updated for Windows 95+ systems, and X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter Flight School (it's essentially a demo for the full game). Although XvT Flight School is a complete ripoff, this package is well worth the asking price for the other two games. They aren't only updated to make sure they work on modern computer systems and use modern joysticks, but have had a graphics overhaul and now use the XvT engine. Even if you already have an older version of these two games this package is well worth getting.

X-Wing Alliance - In my opinion X-Wing Alliance is the only way to fly right now. Unlike the other games in the X-Wing series, XWA has everything. A great singleplayer campaign, a skirmish editor, multiplayer features, proper hardware accelerated graphics, and it can still be patched pretty easily with new missions and ships. If you can only get one of the games from the X-Wing series right now, then this is the one.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight & MotS - Although the graphics are dated, this is still a great game to play. The mission design is spot on, the music and effects are perfect, has a great storyline which is delivered by some well made FMV sequences, and the ability to use a lightsabre! The AI seems weak compared to today's standards, but since when have stormtroopers been smart or able to shoot straight. The bad AI will probably make the experience even more like Star Wars. While this is far from the best FPS out now, the very fact that JK can still compete is testament to how great this game is.

Rogue Squadron - While much more arcade like than the X-Wing Series, this planet based starfighter game is still worth a look. You get to play Luke Skywalker commanding the legendary Rogue Squadron before the Rebels established a base on Hoth, which allows you to nip around some Star Wars landscapes blowing the hell out of TIE Fighters. As fun as this game is, it's really a console game as can be seen by the lack of multiplayer features or opportunities for fans to customise this game. Now it's on budget, RS is worth getting if you already have everything else, but I would opt for one of the other budget Star Wars games out now.

Grim Fantango - The first LucasArts adventure game to be made in 3D, this is probably one of the the lot. While nothing, NOTHING, can beat Sam and Max, Grim Fandango comes pretty close. Grim is a darker game than the others, but that just gives this game a black humour which works perfectly for the topic ...death! The 3D isn't just to make the game look pretty either, it gets rid of the point and click of previous games. This may be a bit worrying for you, but I find the new system very intuitive. Even more scary is the fact the game plays better with a joypad!!! Second only to Sam and Max, that still makes this game a classic.

The Curse of Monkey Island - Not to be confused with the latest game in this adventure series, Escape from Monkey Island, this is the 2D sequel to the original 2 Monkey Island games. For a 2D game it is very pretty and highly stylised, but the engine doesn't seem to be able to cope with it. The characters don't move around as smoothly as you would like, and the point is a tad erratic, but if you can forgive that then you will find a very funny story and a few nice puzzles. Fans of the original 2 games will find this version to be easier to complete and much shorter to play than it's predecessors. Still, this makes a nice interlude until Escape From Monkey Island comes out on budget.
