ISD Relentless
Report #6
6.7.2003 - RA Jahan Kalar
Greetings and welcome to another Relentless Ship Report. In an effort to keep these things timely and reliable, as well as to provide discussion points for the meeting on Sunday, I will now be releasing these reports by the end of the day Saturday of every week. Also, now that we have a Wing Commander again releasing regular reports, and since I'm sure you don't want to read another report on the same things, I won't be recovering everything in MAJ Mikalen's report. This will be more of a supplament to the Wing report, if that makes sense. In any case, labels are really irrelevant, it is what it is, and if I sit here talking about what it is too much longer, I'm not going to have any time to actually write it :)
Numbers and Recruitment
a.. As MAJ Mikalen mentioned in his Wing report, Wing IX is now down to 22 pilots. This ties us for the smallest Wing in the TIE Corps. This brings us to several points I'd like to talk about.
b.. First off, As MAJ Mikalen also mentioned in his report, this means recruit, recruit and recruit. If you know anyone online or in real life who you think would be interested in joining, talk to them. Remember, you get a nice shiny medal of instruction for recruiting someone, and since our numbers are low, you might get a little something extra too...
c.. That being said, we're not here to have a contest to see who has the biggest ship/wing/squadron. That's why I'm not going to set benchmarks for how big I want the ship to be X number of weeks from now. That's why I'm not going to worry that we are too small. The Relentless can hold up to 74 people total including me and MAJ Mikalen. So 23 may seem small, but what exactly is *too* small? Our two most recent competitions with other Wings saw us beating two wings that are about half again as large as we are. Unlike some people, I do not feel that numbers really represent how "good" a wing or ship is. I would rather have 22 active people under my command than 73 people who sit around and take up space. Personally I think you guys are the most active per capita of any wing in the TC, and I think that is much better than having 6 squadrons full of inactive bozos.
d.. To sum it all up, yes, I would like our numbers to go up, but it's not keeping me up nights. The BGs have a tradition of agressivly AWOLing pilots who just sit around and fill cockpits, so I think our lower numbers reflect a tradition of active participation rather than anything negative. But if you can find people who you think would enjoy being a part of Wing IX, talk with them. Krax is trying to get his wife to join (I pity the CMDR who has to boss around the BGCOM's wife), I've been talking with a few RL friends who might enjoy it here, you should try and do the same. And if anyone has any great recruting ideas, let me know, I'm open to any suggestions.
Standing Orders
a.. Lately I've been working with MAJ Mikalen and the Wing IX CMDRs (speaking of which, that would be a good name for a band) on creating some Standing Orders for the Relentless. Now I know that traditionally the BGs have been less rules and regulations oriented than, say, the Sov, but I assure you I have no diabolical scheme to have you all goose-stepping around the coordoors or saluting everything that moves. Most of the standing orders are simply suggestions on how to do things in a more efficient, fair, or fun manner. I'm still working on them since I want to find the balance between creating some structure and forcing everyone to dance to the same tune. I'll be releasing them soon, and if you have any suggestions once I do, feel free to share them with me. Just thought I'd give you all a heads up and quash the rumors that I'm going to turn the Rel into a mini-Sov (although I am looking into getting a superlaser).
Meetings and Office Hours
a.. In case you forgot, we are now holding weekly meetings in #ISD_Relentless on Undernet at 2:00 PM CST (that's 8:00 PM GMT) for about 30 minutes or so. You can get news from around the Rel as well as get a chance to talk with your commanders, wing commander or commodore. I encourage you all to be there, we had a good showing last week and I think the more people we have the better it will be.
b.. I'm still trying to find time in my schedule during the week to hold office hours on IRC, I need to quit my job or something (not this one, the one that pays me actual money...wait a second...). In any case, I will work out something soon, stay tuned.
Other Stuff
a.. "Think about how stupid the average person is. Then think about the fact that half of them are even stupider than that." --George Carlin
b.. "Power seems like a great rush to those who don't understand it." --Anon
That's all for now...until next time, shoot straight and faster than they do.
