That lovable X-Wing jockey Corran Horn from old novels is back, this time with the second-coolest job in the Star Wars galaxy, that of a Jedi Knight (only a Dark Jedi Knight bests that). While being the source of a galaxy-wide cloning racket shipping custom made soldiers to the Empire(I mean, seriously, there’s like 50 Corran Horns in the TIE Corps) old man Horn has also established himself as quite the elite pilot and Jedi. This novel brings him to Yavin 4 to train under Luke Skywalker when his wife, the lovely Mirax Terrik, is kidnapped by an unknown foe. Horn pretty much gets disillusioned with the Yavin Jedi, and chooses to leave and pursue his own training. His journey takes him in to the service of the Invids, a pirate group operating on the ISD Invidious under former-Imperial Moff Leonia Tavira. Horn makes his way up the ranks in the Invids to command a squad, and before long has a few enemies within the ranks. He decides to deal out a bit of discipline Jedi style on the pirates, and begins harassing them at night under the guise of a mysterious ghostly Jedi. During his time in the Invids, he discovers just where his wife is- being held captive by the Jensaraii, a group of untrained Force users working for ‘Admiral’ Tavira. He makes his way to their homeworld, and a lovely reunion with Luke Skywalker, some Noghri, and some old Rogue mates ensues, followed by a big battle in which the Jensaraii are defeated and Mirax is rescued. Luke tries to convince the Jensaraii to join his happy clan of Jedi, but they decline. Then everyone goes home to Coruscant and all is well.

Seriously, the coolest thing in this book is the way Admiral Tavira sleeps with all the men in her employ. She strolls up and down the hangar on her ISD like its a store window, picking the man she wants and then whisking him away to her quarters. Dude, how come that never happened when we had Sarriss in power? Oh well…
Another cool thing is the insight into Corran’s past, with him finding out a whole heap about his Jedi heritage. Cool stuff. Oh yeah, and the Caamasi.. while introduced in Zahn’s Hand of Thrawn duology, this book really is the first chronological appearance of them, and they are quite a cool race.

The introduction of different ‘types’ of Jedi. This book says there were supposedly a legion of "Corellian Jedi" who chose to stay at home and just look after their sector, with their own set of rules and a code. This kind of defeats the purpose of a Jedi Order in which all the members are servants of the galaxy, completely given over to the protection of the people. But then I suppose, they’re Corellians..
