FA Darkov Interview

You are now the Special Operations Director, but what were you before then?

How long you got? J

Like everybody I started small, just a simple pilot in the Infiltrator Wing, being an ex-rebel and all. After a week though, of being harassed non-stop on IRC, I decided to spread my wings, I signed up for the Corporate Division as a test pilot, and the Dark Brotherhood, as a Sith, one of those rookies who think they can have a saber the day they join. From then on, it was always up.

Shortly after the end of the first month I was a commander in the both the IW and CD, and within six months I had my own ship in the IW and was on the Direx Board in the CD. As for the DB, back then the structure of the Houses, (Clans were rare), was somewhat more liberal than now, I held one of those exclusive positions, (created specifically for the House). Not quite sure what I supposed to do, memory is a big foggy, but it was in House Scholae Palatinae, I was one of the number who supported it when Wrath applied to have it created.

Since then though, I’ve been practically everywhere, and at most levels, out of the whole EH, the only places I haven’t served, are the Bounty Hunter’s Guild, (because Royal tried to recruit me so often, once he left it just didn’t have the same appeal, not that it did in the first place), the Senate, and the SW CCG, the latter two being because by the time they were created I was already on the EH Command Staff and had little time for new adventures.

More recently, I was in limbo before I became SOD, semi-leave, as real life was being particularly annoying, before that though, I held Infiltrator Wing Commander (IWCOM) for awhile, and Combat Operations Officer (COO), before that. I believe in my time as COO we had a great winning streak against the RS. It was fun.

You’re obviously a veteran to the EH. How long have you been with us?

Too long, maybe J

Four and a half years now, it will be five in April. Long standing I am, and with my next four years planned out already, I’m probably going to be around here for a lot longer to come.

As SOD, what is your job? What do you do?

Difficult question, extremely. My job description is short and sweet, I’m authorised to undertake operations at request of the Fleet Commander, what these operations are, well, we’ll have to wait and see.

I’m also charged with maintaining good relations between the various subgroups of the EH. And well, I’ve been an SGCOM twice now, I know that’s going to be more trouble than its worth, but I like a challenge.

In the meantime though, whilst things are quiet, I’ve set up some small projects, or rather am helping others with their projects. I’m on the CS, as an Imperial Advisor, I would hope that brings with it a little respect, and the authority to help people when they need it.

You seem to be working quite closely with some of the Medical Corps, with DOC Astix regularly posting news about competitions. Was it your intention to do this, or did it just happen? If there is an “alliance,” what are your plans for working together?

Heh, lots of things just happen. The question is whether anything good comes of them. I’ve worked with many people, from the lowest cadet to the highest officer, if they need a hand with anything I am here. Astix has some ideas in his head, they may not always be good, but with a little guidance and some positive feedback, something useful will one day be produced by him. It’s the same with every member of the EH, a little help is all that is needed to set them on the right track to success.

The SOD is only answerable to Grand Admiral Ronin (and SA Compton probably). How close do you work together in the “specialist projects”?

Only answerable… depends what I’ve done wrong J

If the FC or XO want me to do anything, then I do it, it’s that simple. I wouldn’t say that I work any closer with them now than I have before; in fact, it’s probably quite the opposite. But there is no doubt, that if Ronin wants me to do something specific in an operation, or a project, then he will give me every little detail that he thinks I will need, and I will report back to him regularly about the progress on it. The FC and XO are very experienced and wise people, anyone in the EH who didn’t consult them when they have the opportunity would simply be foolish.

What operations are you doing in the SOD right now? Please explain them.

There are currently two Projects under way at the moment. Details of both can be found at my office, (http://www.xwing.nu), forgive the URL, it’s my only domain name hosted by an NT server.

Project Fiction:

This is a project to create a TIE Corps Fiction Compendium, the original idea is Fondor’s and he is the person leading it up. Between him and FSE Kawolski they are creating the compendium to work with the existing TC database and roster. Features would include the author’s name linking to their profile, a search facility, and possible a listing of stories by an author on the author’s profile. All fiction submitted would be checked by Fondor, and if passed would be approved for the compendium, the guidelines for this would be written by Fondor himself. So if you have any questions, contact him.

Project Homeworld:

Homeworld, possibly the best way to experience space combat if you’re not a trigger happy fighter jock. Using a totally 3D engine and environment, you build and control a fleet, what could be more fun. Star Wars Homeworld! That’s what. A SW mod for Homeworld is in the works, and currently in beta, so a group of us are getting together to evaluate this mod, to see whether it should be used by the EH, in any capacity, but most likely for the NC. We’ll be evaluating it over its remaining couple of months of production, so that by the time its finished, we’ll know for definite whether it should be proposed to the FC and XO. If you interested in joining this team, (http://www.xwing.nu/join.asp) just fill in the form, saying that you want to test SW Homeworld.

Is it possible for other EH members to help out in the projects? If you can, how can you offer your services to these projects?

Anyone is welcome to help, the more the merrier. Especially with Project Homeworld. At my office there is a join form, (http://www.xwing.nu), just fill it in, stating what you can do, or if there is an existing project you want to work on, just say in the form and you will be taken into consideration.

Are you planning on any other operations or projects in the future?

Well, its either that or go AWOL, and I have no love for being useless like that. There is a plan for an Operation in the near future, how near, I can’t say. Along with this I’m still considering some ideas for new projects, keep looking at my office and my weekly domain report for the latest information on what I am doing.

If someone else had an idea for a project, could they suggest it to you? If so, how?

Of course, I’m not stupid enough to think that only I can have good ideas, or that anyone below me isn’t worth listening to. After all, we all started at the bottom of the ladder. If someone has an idea, there is a form on my website that lets you submit it, (http://www.xwing.nu/submit_idea.asp), fill it in, at worse I’ll explain why I don’t think it would work, at best, you’ll be dragged to my office to explain it in more detail with the possibility of it being put into action, with you at the helm.

New ideas are always welcome, the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly ones. All will be considered.

When you’re not working as the SOD, what else do you do in the EH and Real-Life?

Nasty subject, from everyone else’s point of view J

In the EH, I’m basically limiting myself at the moment, SOD is my main position, but I am also DGM, (Deputy Games Master), in the Fringe. You know the Fringe, that estranged little role-playing group people keep thinking died out years ago. It’s a good laugh when you get a game going, but with time limited, I’m doing the paperwork and just looking forward to Star Wars Online, which will no doubt be what the Fringe was made for J

Real life…. This is where the lines blur, meeting EHers outside of IRC, it’s a scary thing, but drinking sessions are a good laugh. I suppose by the time this is published, I’d have done it again, gone out with some of the British rabble that make up the EH and gotten horrible drunk in some poorly lit, seedy nightclub in London somewhere.

It makes a nice break though, old man I may not be, but I’m a mature student, and college life has its downside, in that it requires me to use my brain, something I haven’t done since I left school four years ago. Of course, after this year of college I go on to university, which is one long party, where being sober is the painful bit between drinking sessions.

And have a look at http://www.arsenal.com they are without doubt, the best team in the world. And just for the record, baseball sucks.

(Battlecry would like to apologise for the mad ramblings of FA Darkov towards the end of the question. We all know that there is only one great football team, in the world , EVER...and that is Newcastle United (http://www.nufc.co.uk)!!!)

Why do you think that you got the job of SOD ahead of the other applicants?

Something Ronin could answer better. And he wouldn’t sound arrogant about it J

Something to do with experience probably, you won’t find many in the EH who have done as much as me, or lasted as long as me. Although there are quite a few who have done substantially better than me. Who knows, maybe I’ll do something that makes a big difference on the EH in the coming years, would be nice to leave a legacy.

What tempted you to the job of SOD? You already held high up positions in the EH, so it couldn’t have just been for the promotion.

Promotions? Eight months since my last promotion, three since my last medal. I don’t expect either anymore, haven’t for quite sometime. I’m very much an active person, I find it hard not to be, and so when SOD became available, I was positionless and looking to get back into it as soon as possible. Although I’m not as active at this moment in time as I was before I left IWCOM or I will be again, this run up to Christmas is always a bad time of year for me, and with college being a pain, its unusually time consuming. But SOD also had the appeal that it was a “non-linear” position, it’s not like your average CS position where the job description is the be all and end all of it. With SOD I have plenty of freedom, and that, is fun.

What has been your greatest achievement in the EH? What do you feel the most proud about when you look back upon it?

Slapping Ronin with a trout and getting away with it… well, I got kicked from the channel, but I lived! J

Seriously though, I think it’s the help I’ve given to members over the years. I mean, I’ve never had a brilliant idea, or been particularly productive, pushing paper isn’t that fun in my opinion, so I haven’t got something like the rebirth of the TC, which Kawolski can accredit to his name, or the constant high standards of IWATS, which is down to Astatine’s hard work. But whenever someone has needed my help, I’ve always been there, and helped to the best of my ability. Whenever a new member is lost, I’ll answer their questions, I’ll even give them some useful tips on how to survive. And in times gone by I’ve stood up against higher officers for the benefit of a fellow member. I’m not some kind of Guardian Angel, and I sure as hell ain’t a Saint, but helping others is what I get the most satisfaction from in the EH, so the times I have done it successfully in the past, is the times I feel most proud of.

What would be your ideal position in the EH, if you couldn’t be SOD anymore? (Not FC though, as thinking that is treason!!!) Why does that position appeal to you?

Well, not being on the Command Staff doesn’t appeal to me anymore, so naturally its something high up. Looking at the CS page, you’ve got the top two, then there are the ten other Command Officers, well, they’re all boring in my opinion, lot of paper work. Then there are the Subgroup Commanders, fun, having ideas, commanding others, playing FC to a small part of the EH, it’s a nice number if you’re any good at it. Imperial Advisors, what a scruffy bunch, other than SOD, there is COO again I suppose, although that would be going backwards. Then there is the HCI, I’ve been an INQ, damn did I get bored quick. No thanks, not for me.

So, you say FC would be treason? Shame. That leaves XO, responsible for the supervision of the subgroups, that could be fun and the Newsletter, wouldn’t mind having a go at that, see if I can make up for all the times I’ve missed getting a submission in, (and that’s a lot of times). And I’ve been CA:XO before, so I’m not totally guessing on what would be involved. So, if I couldn’t have SOD, and I could have anything else, it’d definitely be XO. Watch out Compton I’m after your office, (its big too, very big).

But there is one other position I wouldn’t mind having a go at, not exactly an EH position. That’s FC of the RS. Be damned hard with the RS’s governing body, the High Council, always getting involved, but it sure as hell would be a fun challenge.

In your experience, where’s the best place to be on the EH rosters: High Ranking or Low Ranking?

Depends what you want from the EH. If you want to fly, stay down the bottom of the ladder, or in my case, and you’re a crap pilot with a good head, get on up there. So for me, I’ve excelled the further up I’ve gone, and the longer I’ve served, the more I’ve learnt that I can apply. But nothing is easy; it all requires you to put in a lot of effort for the little rewards that are on offer.

Out of all the subgroups you have been in, which was the best?

Daft question, it could only be the Infiltrator Wing. Took me over three years to get from FM to IWCOM, but it was worth it. And I’d still be IWCOM if real life hadn’t interfered and stolen all my time. It’s not the TIE Corps, its nothing like the TIE Corps, its not meant to be. So if you’re like me, and flying isn’t everything, then it might be interesting to you. It’s just refreshingly different.

Is there anything else that you would like to say to finish off this interview?

Its been fun, this kind of thing doesn’t happen enough in my opinion, people should know each other better than they do, from the top to the bottom. We all make up the same club, every one of us, in all the subgroups; we need to work together to make this club more successful than it already is. Keep flying and never lose sight of your goal, it took me over three years to achieve the goal I set myself when I joined, but I got it, and it was worth it. It is always worth it.

Thank you, sir.
