Star Trek: Bridge Commander

WHAT??? A Star Trek game being previewed in a Star Wars newsletter!!! Don’t worry! I have a very good reason for this…

I’m sure that most of you know about the X-Wing series of games that have come out on the PC for the past few years. The magnificent developers Totally Games created these space flight simulators, and now they are focusing their attentions on a new topic…Star Trek.

In Bridge Commander, you take the helm of the Galaxy-class USS Sovereign (nice name) after a star collapses, rattling the ship with its Super Nova and killing the Captain. The collapsed star also threatens the lives of colonists in the region, and you have to save them…while finding out why the star collapsed. There are loads of twists and turns planned for the story, including a way to allow you to Captain the shiny-new Sovereign-class Starship as featured in the recent films.

Rather than just being a decent remake of the Starfleet Academy games, the game will also feature exploration and diplomacy missions as well as combat. It is still to be seen if this will work though, as we all hate waiting for a mission to really kick off in X-Wing games, never mind have to play a whole mission without firing a weapon.

This problem should be countered with lots of ways to play the game. If you get bored just telling people where the ship should go, or to check out some anomaly, then you can just go and do it yourself. This is done by having a 3D bridge where not only can you look out into space, but go directly and man a particular position and even watch engineering teams fix blown systems in the heat of battle.

As promising as this all sounds, it’s a well-known fact that Star Trek games are usually rubbish and we’ll have to see if this game will be any different. Personally, I think it will as there has been a little Star Trek revolution with ST: Elite Force looking a playing very well.

Also, will it be better than X-Wing…or just different!!!
