Arriving on the bridge, Torres saw that the Challenge was
moments away from the Ssh' System and nodded to himself.
Once again the crew had managed to perform to expectations and they were
a full day's ahead of schelude. However
he did notice that a large number of black suited officers scattered across the
bridge and that Kilger was sitting in the COM's chair.
Torres shrugged and walked to the large windows. He really didnt care for
sitting down when leaving hyperspace, he preferred to be standing and have a
full view of the event.
"Now entering real space."
With that announcement, the Challenge silently roared its
way into the Ssh' System and lined up, although Torres was puzzled as the
heading was not for the rebel base as he had ordered.
"Typhoon Squadron launching."
Well at least one thing was going to plan.
Typhoon had been selected to lead the assault to ensure that Tornado and
Thunder broke through the defenses and neutralised the base.
Torres had decided to capture the base and wait for a rebel task force to
arrive for supplies, springing an ambush and eliminating two threats to the EH.
While he had been given a date by which to arrive at the system, FA Horn
had forgotten to give Torres a return date, a mistake Torres knew he had made
deliberately.
"Commence."
Before anyone knew what was happening, Kilger and his men
had overwhelmed the bridge crew and were now manning the stations.
"Fire!!"
With that order, the Challenge opened fire on the
unsuspecting fighters of Typhoon Squadron who were forming up for the mission.
Luckly Tornado and Thunder Squadrons had halted their launches when the
firing had commenced.
"NO!!!!!"
Torres watched as laser-fire slammed into the fighters,
causing one to spin towards Ssh'Peka while the others attempted to evade the
deadly fire. Turning around, he saw
Kilger was standing a few feet away holding a blaster to his face.
"VA Torres, I hearby assume command of this vessel
and place you under arrest for treason."
Out of the corner of his eye, Torres saw a missile lock
onto a fighter he knew, somehow, was Calli's
"Yes thats right, I'm going to destroy Typhoon
Squadron. When we return, they will
be proclaimed as heroes of the Empire, an example of the supreme sacrifice we
have to make to save the New Order and the Empire.
But before that happens, you, my dear VA, will have an accident, a fault
accident. Shot while escaping, I
believe will be the cause. Although
the doctors will do everything they can to help you, they will not succeed.
Take him away."
During this time, Typhoon Squadron has all but left the
range of the Challenge's guns while 3 fighters were still in range.
A quick explosion surrounding one of the fighters distracted Kilger for a
small second and Torres focused on the console which controlled the hyperdrive.
Using the Force, he activated the emergency recall, a program which had
been installed in all EH ships. It's
purpose was to ensure that all EH ships returned to Aurora, regardless of the
condition of their crews.
Feeling the sudden whirl of the hyperdrive, Kilger stood
shock and then began to turn around. In
that moment, Torres threw a knife he always kept up his sleve at Kilger while
loyal stormtroopers entered the bridge and killed the renegade ISMAers.
The knife stabbed Kilger in the throw, killing him, but he managed to
stay alive long enough to fire off one shot at Torres which hit him at
near-point blank range in the chest.
Standing up long enough, Torres saw that the laser-fire
was losing it's effectiveness and then the Challenge entered hyperspace which
appeared to be going black. This
intrigued Torres because when hyperspace was usually multi-coloured and not
black. Before he could think more
on this event, the blackness fell over him and Torres collapsed onto the deck as
medics raced to his side and as the Challenge desperately sped for home.
Entering the bridge, MAJ Corran Force, WC of Wing X,
surveyed the scene. Dozens of
stormtroopers were dragging the bodies of the renegades while medics frantically
worked to stablise VA Torres before allowing him to be moved.
Noticing Sarah standing near the nav console, he walked over and saw the
situation.
"Well, we're lucky we've got a Dark Jedi as our COM.
He managed to activate the recall program before it was too late."
"Not for Typhoon unfortunately.
According to reports, severel fighters were damaged.
Luckly none were destroyed."
"Well we won't know until we return to Aurora.
Which will take us one more day than it took us to get here."
"Hmm, get down to sickbay, Sarah, and get yourself
patched up. I'll handle things
here."
"Aye sir."
Slowly walking off the bridge, Sarah saw that the medics
had managed to stablised Torres and were now moving him away.
As Torres was moving to sickbay, the Challenge continued on it's way hom,
leaving 12 pissed off pilots and an incident with the potential to destroy one
of the elite wings in the Imperial Navy.
