Unwanted Vengeance

Kain Selequest, a young and willing Dark Jedi, stepped into the troop carrier, his lightsaber dangling on his belt. His dark red belt, just like all the other people on the shuttle had. As well as the same helmet, cape, and uniform, all the same dark red.

Kain is a member of the Grand Master’s Royal Guard, as well as all the other people on the troop carrier. They were about to leave the Super Star Destroyer Avenger, flagship of the Dark Brotherhood, fly to the surface of Endor, and engage in a battle with a group of Light Jedi.

These particular Jedi had been on Endor for some time now, trying to set up a training facility. In the mission briefing, Kain heard the Commander of the Guard say that none of the outpost’s defenses were operational. One thing was for sure: the time for the attack was now.

The Light Jedi on Endor were the same group of Jedi that Kain had lived and trained with, until he realized the true nature of the Force: the Dark Side.

Looking back in his past, he wondered why his so-called "friends" didn’t go with him to the Shadow Academy. They, instead, tried to turn him back to the Light Side. They said they were tying to save him. They didn’t realize that by turning to the Dark Side, he had already saved himself. If the only knew the power of the Dark Side; then they wouldn’t have to battle against each other. Kain began to wonder exactly, how he got into this mess. Looking through his memory, he searched for the answer to his question. Slowly, he began to remember what had happened so long, long ago…

THWAP! The two pieces of wood smacked together. Kain and his best friend, Eric, had round pieces of wood, dueling with them like they were lightsabers.

Kain, was startled by the memory he was seing. He and Eric were about nine or ten years old. "I’ll get you Jedi," said Eric playfully. "Not harldy," Kain heard his young self reply back. Things continued like this a while until Kain had his "saber" knocked out of his hand.

"Good job," he said, "I guess you win this one."

"Yes," replied Eric, "I do. Oh, I just remembered, father said I get to start my Jedi Training in 2 years in stead of three. Isn’t it great? Even though I’m a year younger then you, I still get to start with you!"

"Great!" replied the young Kain, "but are you sure you’ll be ready?"

"Yes, I’ll be ready."

A bright light flashed and suddenly, Kain was seeing a new memory. It was of him and Eric being promoted to Apprentice. Then, another flash and he was seeing a memory of him telling Eric about the Shadow Academy.

Why couldn’t he hear the words being spoken? Another flash and he was seeing the memory of himself graduating the Shadow Academy.

Kain jerked awake. He had been dreaming, and seeing his memories on the dreams. All the times he and Eric spent together, and then, just like that, Eric deserted him. Eric wanted the easy way. He wanted to be a Jedi. Being a Jedi was far easier then being a Dark Jedi. No matter what Kain did to try and reverse it, Eric would always be weak.

"We will be landing in five minutes," the voice over the intercom said.

Five more minutes until his old friend’s worst nightmare, and his.

The cargo doors flew open, and out charged the Grand Master’s Royal Guard. Kain ignited his lightsaber, picked out an unsuspecting Jedi, and sliced his head off.

This was going to be easier than he thought.

The battle raged, Jedi dropping dead left and right, and occasionally, a Royal Guard would get cut a little by an enemy lightsaber, but no fatalities. Kain was in a lightsaber duel with a Jedi when he decided that he had had enough. He simply choked the life out of him with the Dark Side of the Force, the more powerful of the two sides. Something hit him from behind, knocking his helmet off, but that was about it. He turned around to see a Jedi holding large rock in his hand. Kain simply chuckled to himself and cut the man in half, leaving him there to die a slow and painful death. He felt a disturbance in the Force, so he looked up to the catwalk that he had felt it come from, and standing on it was, none other than, Eric. Using the Force, he jumped up to it.

"Kain?" Eric asked. "Is it really you?"

"Yes, it’s me." "I’m surprised you’re still alive. You are lucky I don’t kill you right now.

"Then do it." "If I am truly your friend, you won’t do it."

Kain backed up. There was now about ten meters between him and Eric. "What?" he asked.

"You heard me." Eric threw down his lightsaber, and kicked it off of the catwalk. "Kill me."

Kain shut down his lightsaber, and hung it on his belt. He looked around. The battle was over now. The only Jedi still alive was Eric.

Eric stretched out his hand, "Give up the Dark Side; come back to us. We all missed you, Kain. Come back to us. We used to always have fun together, and we still can. Come back, Kain. I’m your friend."

Kain stretched his hand out. What was he going to do? He and Eric had been friends all there lives, but Eric also abandoned Kain. What was he going to do?

"Come on Kain, just take a few steps and we’ll be together again." Eric repeated, "I’m your friend, Kain."

Kain, with his hand still stretched out replied, "No, you were my friend, but you abandoned me." And with that, a bright blue-white flash of lightning flew out of Kain's hand, and into Eric’s body.

Eric cried out in pain. Another flash sent him onto the catwalk face first.

Kain looked around. All the members of the Grand Master’s Royal Guard were watching what was happening on the catwalk, none saying a word.

Kain screamed, "How does it feel to have the Dark Side’s living spark coursing through your body? Now do you know the power of the Dark Side?" Kain sent another surge of lightning into Eric.

Eric fell off the catwalk, barely hanging on with his hands, his chin poking over the edge of the catwalk. "Kain, why? I’m your friend."

Kain looked down on him and said, "No, you were my friend, but you betrayed me." And with that, Kain kicked Eric right in the face, sending him off the catwalk and down to the ground.

Back in his chambers onboard the Avenger, Kain sat in the dark, thinking of what he had just done. Eric had gotten what he deserved for betraying him. Kain had his vengeance. The vengeance he never truly wanted.
